Cheese Flavored Dog Biscuits
1 c Rolled oats
1/3 c Margarine
1 c Boiling water
3/4 c Cornmeal
1 tb Sugar
1 To 2 tsp. chicken or beef flavored instant bouillon (I used chicken)
1/2 c Milk
4 oz (1 cup) shredded cheddar cheese
1 ea Egg, beaten
2 c To 3 cups all-purpose OR whole wheat flour (I used whole wheat)
Heat oven to 325 degrees. Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl, combine rolled oats, margarine and boiling water; let stand 10 minutes. Stir in cornmeal, sugar, bouillon, milk, cheese and egg; mix well. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Add flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form a stiff dough.
On floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky, 3 to 4 minutes. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness, cut with bone shaped cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes on until golden brown. Cool completely. Store loosely covered. Makes 3 1/2 dozen large dog biscuits or 8 dozen small dog biscuits.
If Desi and Licorice do like these, I think I will substitute butter for margarine. Don’t they look great?
Blessings,

My dog would love those. I too think dog treats are over priced. I’ve made treats before with wheat germ and baby food (and I forget what else… just a few ingredients.) They didn’t look great but our dog loved them anyways! It’s all about flavor for them.
My dogs absolutely LOVE these, Jessica. I was surprised too being that they don’t have any meat in them. Let me know if you try them, and what your dog thinks!
If I wanted to substitute the cheese what could I use to make up the bulk of the cheese, or could I leave it out altogether?
I would assume you could just leave it out Pam. I’m not sure what you could sub for it…I suppose some other dryish item.
ooh a savory dog treat recipe, I’ll have to give it a try. I posted a peanut butter / molasses style dog treat recipe on my blog a while back. Check it out at: http://www.kshippee.blogspot.com
Hey there Kai! My dogs adore these when I make them. It’s been a long time, unfortunately for them! Checking out your blog now!
