Make a Light Hut (Cardboard Box)

A what?? you are probably thinking….

A light hut is a structure used for starting seeds indoor. It is a wonderful tool for those who need (or prefer to) start seeds indoor. It provides a wonderfully warm (incubator-like) atmosphere for sprouting seeds of any kind. It’s also really great if you have kitties who love to eat seedlings.

I loved using mine last year for starting my seedlings, but for some reason I decided I didn’t need it anymore sometime during the summer and I threw it away. Only last month did I realize that I really needed it, so I decided to build another. Guess who gets to benefit from my mistake? You guys! Good deal, right? So let’s get started with this video.

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial. If I’ve forgotten anything, or you would like more details, please let me know and I’ll try to answer as soon as I can.

  1. Carey, I don’t know that it sprouts seeds quicker, as much as it gives a safe place for your seeds to sprout. You do leave the light on all the time, as the light bulb simulates sunlight. It also keeps it warm.

  2. Hey Christine! :D

No, I’ve always just used the curly bulb. I’ll try to dig up last year’s photos so you can see how my plants grew last time I used one. Let me know how it works for you!

  3. This is perfect timing for me. I was just telling my friend that I’m not sure what to do, since Tallulah (the young cat) keeps getting into plants and I just know she’s going to go after my seedling starts.

Is it OK with you if I link to this in my blog? Let me know. :)

  4. Thanks Sue Ellen! I’d like to say this was all my idea, but I actually got the idea from a science curriculum that we used last year for homeschooling. I liked it so much that I wanted to do it again. :)

    • Hi Lisa Lynn! I have great success sprouting seeds in my light hut, now I just need to perfect my hardening off skills, which aren’t as good as my sprouting skills, lol!

I’d love to come share at your blog. Thank you for the invite!
