| Lucy and Ethel, cruising the planters by our ‘beach’. |
I was up early, browsing the internet, getting my usual morning “news” on my family and friends from Facebook, only to hear, “Bock, BOCK, bock bock!”

| Lucy faces off with Storm. I think Lucy makes THE CAT uncomfortable! |
So I went outside to feed, water, uncover them for the morning, and let them stretch their legs in the yard for a few minutes.
Apparently, not long enough. Within minutes of my returning inside….”Bock, BOCK, bock bock!!” Oh dear.

| Scratching around the yard for goodies. |
Back outside I went to investigate, bringing along a couple of very ripe pears as a peace offering.
I returned to the warmth of my covers and hopped back into the internet.
“Bock, BOCK, bock bock!” No dice, apparently.

Ok. That’s it. Much to my dismay at having to leave my nice warm bed, I decided to head outside for a THIRD time to let them linger and scratch around outside of their coop. The 50 degree weather and the dense fog wasn’t so bad, and their soft cooing and ‘conversation’ proved to make it downright tranquil out back. Now that I was out there, I decided to take care of a few chores.
And though it was tranquil, and I did get a few things done, I was happy to get back inside to resume my morning cup of coffee and soak in some warmth.
You might ask why I put up with such discontented chickens…..

| Every morning, Lucy and Ethel have a couple of their lovely, large, brown eggs waiting, just for me.

We had two red chickens too, named appropriately “Lucy, and Ethel” . great minds think alike.
Did you really, Vanessa?? That is so funny! I just think Lucy and Ethel are perfect names for two hens! GMTA, indeed!
Yes they do seem to get noisy around laying time. I throw bread to mine to hush them up. Seems to work. They are pigs.
Lucy and Ethel love bread! I can usually get them to quiet down with a treat, just so long as they are in the mood!
Thanks for visiting, Elaine! Nice to meet you!
I love this post! They were just singing their egg songs I suppose
Sometimes mine sing before they lay their eggs – I call it “egg frustration” haha.
Visiting from the Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop.

PS – We also have 2 girls (Buff Orpingtons) named Lucy & Ethel!
Hi Tammy!
What is funny is that the one that’s NOT laying the egg is usually the one who is “singing”! I think it’s because she can’t see her friend.
Ha ha—-egg frustration!
I’m not surprised that you have a Lucy & Ethel as well—such perfect names for two hens!
I have recently started reading your blog and love it! We raise chickens, horses and ducks on our farm in Virginia and I love finding new farm blogs. I hope you’ll come share at my Farm Girl Blog Fest: http://fresh-eggs-daily.blogspot.com/2012/12/farm-girl-friday-blog-fest-12.html and also enter our contest to win some great Manna Pro products.

Hi Lisa! Thanks for your kind comment and your invitation! I’m out the door right now, but I’ll be over to your blog to share tonight or tomorrow! Thanks again!
Love to see how big Lucy and Ethel have grown!
I know, they are huge, Sandra! The weird thing is that Lucy, having always been the “developmentally delayed” of the two, is now larger than Ethel! No matter—Ethel can hold her own!
